One of the most frequent questions I get is – "What supplies do I need to start making sourdough?"
Technically, the answer is…very little. Most of what you need you will already have around your house. But just in case you do not, each item I list below will have a link you can follow to view or purchase.

Supplies For Sourdough Starter:
- Jar: These do not have to be fancy! Glass is nice so you can easily see and mark the rise. It needs to be large enough to hold triple the amount of starter when fed (just in case). I use the Ball pint or quart jars. In case you do want to get a bit fancier some sets can show the temperature, can be labeled, and come with cloth toppers.
- Small spatulas: Large can work too, but small are ideal for getting down into the jar. I use this Norpro set and love it!
- Coffee Filter or Paper Towel: To top your jar. The airflow will help keep it from molding.
- Warmer: This is optional, but if you have a cooler house some form of warmer is ideal. I use a seedling mat, some use heating pads, others use coffee or candle warmer. You can get creative here. The key is to keep your starter at a nice even temp between 75 and 85 degrees F. Again, no need to get fancy! But in case you want something more, these Kombuchu Heating Wraps will do the job, and have a temp control.
And that is it for supplies to get your starter going! Chances are you already have some or all of the items you need in your kitchen or pantry already. All that's left now is your choice of gluten-free flour and bottled or filtered water!
